WE’VE GOT TELEPHONES TO SAY WHAT WE CAN’T SAY

Once, early last summer, I drove for two days from the Montana-Idaho border to the entrance to Crater Lake. I’ve tried three times now and still haven’t seen that lake.

GOT TO BE WORKED ON!

Sorry Keef, I love you, but Mick takes all here with alternative take and in-the-red vocal for “You Got the Silver” featured on the bootleg recordings Got to be Worked On! You still got the best looks of this interesting slideshow. Love his one at the 2:00 mark, which influenced 90s west coast style icons like Kurt Cobain and Justin Pearson… Ill take that over Cap’n Jack anyday.

C’EST SI BON

Once, very recently, I took a trip to the South of France, my first time to France in fact. I went with one goal in mind- do nothing. Easier said than done. I did however find the best way to do nothing was to stay in one place. While looking at images of the region online I came across this room that looked like a Moroccan cave with vaulted chalk white walls and a modern style hammam. I tracked it down, booked a few days there and set off with a friend from the Mediterranean coast near Cassis to the narrow dirt roads and  countryside near Uzes… to do nothing.  Nothing meaning reading from the huge collection of fascinating art books, drinking bottles of rose, and watching the farmers work the fields beyond the pool of the converted monastery guest house Clos Du Lethe. Doing nothing can be good if you do it right. It can be so good.

DROPPING IN ON SHELTER PUBLICATIONS

Last month I drove up to the Shelter Publications headquarters in Bolinas for a morning visit with Lloyd Kahn; author, publisher, builder, skateboarder (at 76!) and all around enthusiast for good living and common sense. Lloyd gave me a tour of his studio and a sneak peak at his upcoming book about Tiny Homes, out this February. The man has multiple new apple computers but still does all his layouts by hand, which, in my opinion, keeps with the character and spirit of his subject matter. Its all about keeping what works and mixing in the new where necessary.  We talked domes, farm fresh eggs and the benefits of stretching and as we ate coffee cake and walked around his acre of gardens and hand built shelters. I drove back later with a little more than admiration for the way this guy lives his life…
